I booked a $3,000 hotel for Valentine’s Day, but my boyfriend wouldn’t reimburse me his share and dumped me – Karma punished him three times over.

I booked a luxury hotel for Valentine’s Day for $3,000. My boyfriend and I agreed to split the cost. The next day, he dumped me, stayed at the hotel without me, and charged the entire amount to my card. When I received the final bill, it was double. He blocked me. So I logged into his Instagram and let karma do the rest.

I thought Valentine’s Day was going to save my relationship with my boyfriend, Scott. So I booked a luxury hotel. One of those with marble bathrooms, rooftop pools, and chocolate-covered strawberries waiting on the bed.

It cost me $3,000 in total. We agreed to split it.

Scott promised he would give me back his half.

“Don’t worry, baby. I’ll pay you. For now, just put it on your card.”

I booked a luxury hotel.

I should have seen it coming. But I was desperate.

Our relationship had been falling apart for months. Scott barely texted. He barely called.

When we were together, he was on his phone, checking his social media, liking other girls’ posts, and commenting on fitness models’ photos. I was the only one who made an effort.

So I thought maybe a romantic weekend would fix things. Remind him why we fell in love in the first place.

I was the only one making an effort.

***

We arrived at the hotel Friday night. The valet took our suitcases. The lobby smelled of jasmine and expensive candles. Everything was perfect.

The room was gorgeous. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city. A king-size bed with rose petals scattered across it. Chilled champagne in a silver bucket.

I smiled. “It’s perfect, isn’t it?”

Scott barely looked up from his phone. “Yes. Sure.”

“It’s perfect, isn’t it?”

“Scott, can you put your phone down for five minutes?”

She sighed and placed it on the nightstand. “Happy now?”

“Happy!”

We went to dinner at the hotel restaurant. I ordered salmon. He ordered steak. We sat in silence.

I tried to start a conversation. “How was work?”

“Good”.

I tried to start a conversation.

“Good?”

“Yes, Amy. Good.”

“Are you okay? You seem very distant.”

“I’m fine. Can we eat?”

I nibbled on my food; I’d already lost my appetite. This wasn’t how Valentine’s Day should be.

***

The next morning, I woke up and found Scott sitting on the edge of the bed, looking out the window.

This is not how Valentine’s Day should be.

“Scott? What’s wrong?”

She didn’t turn around. “I need space.”

“What do you mean, ‘space’? We’re literally on vacation.”

“I mean, I need to sort some things out.”

“Solve what?”

Finally, she looked at me. “I don’t think this is working.”

“I need space.”

By nightfall, he’d already made up his mind. He’d broken up with me. By text message. While I was sitting in the hotel lobby.

I was in the bathroom trying to pull myself together when my phone buzzed with a message from Scott:

“I think we should end this. I need to be alone right now.”

I ran out of the bathroom, mascara running down my face.

“Are you breaking up with me?”

He shrugged. “I thought it would be easier that way.”

She had broken up with me. By text message.

“Easier for whom?”

“For both of us. Look, I’m going to stay here for the rest of the weekend. I’ll clear my head. You should probably leave.”

I stared at him, stunned. “Do you want me to leave? I paid for this room.”

“Yes, and I’ll pay you back. I already said I would.”

“When?”

“Soon. But… can you leave? I need some time for myself.”

“Do you want me to leave? I paid for this room.”

So I packed my things. I put my clothes in my suitcase. Scott didn’t help me. He just sat on the bed, staring at his phone. When I left, he didn’t even look up.

I cried the entire way back home.

***

The next day, my phone started buzzing with notifications from my banking app.

Hotel charge: $87 – Room service.

Hotel charge: $135 – Room service.

Hotel charge: $220 – Spa services.

My phone started buzzing with notifications from my banking app.

I stared at my phone in disbelief.

I called Scott. He didn’t answer.

I called again. It went to voicemail.

I called the hotel. “Hello, I’m calling about the charges on my card. I’m the one who booked room 412.”

“Just a moment, ma’am,” the receptionist paused. “Yes, it seems the guest in that room has placed quite a few orders. Room service, bar tabs, and spa appointments.”

I called Scott. He didn’t answer.

“Can you stop charging it to my card?”

“I’m sorry, but the registered card is the one we will continue to use until departure.”

I hung up and screamed into a pillow. Scott was using me.

***

A week later, I checked my bank account. The final invoice had been processed.

It wasn’t $3,000. Not $4,000. Almost $6,000.

Scott was using me.

I stared at the screen, my vision blurred.

Scott had charged everything to my card. Multiple room service orders. Expensive tasting menus. Champagne. Whiskey. Massages. A couples’ spa package. Wait. Couples?

My stomach turned.

I had taken someone else. To the hotel I had paid for.

Wait. Couples?

I called him. Blocked.

I sent him a message. He left it on read for hours. Then he blocked me there too.

He hadn’t just left me; he had planned it. He had used me and disappeared with my money.

***

I drove to his apartment. I was going to demand he give me my money back. To yell at him. To make him feel even a fraction of what I felt. But when I arrived, I saw something that stopped me in my tracks.

I had planned it.

Women’s clothing on the stairs.

Red heels. A black lace top. A handbag I didn’t recognize.

I climbed the stairs slowly, my heart pounding.

The bedroom door was wide open.

I heard laughter.

Red heels.

A woman’s voice: “You’re terrible!”

Scott’s voice: “I know. But she was so stupid. She paid for everything. I got rid of her at the perfect moment.”

More laughter. “You’re awful. What if he finds out?”

“She won’t find out. I blocked her. She’ll get over it eventually. Women always get over it.”

I was frozen. Not because my heart was broken. I mean, it was. But mostly because I was absolutely furious.

“What if he finds out?”

I didn’t make a scene. I turned around, went downstairs, got in my car, and went home.

Because I had a much better idea.

I went home and started packing Scott’s things into boxes. Old hoodies he’d left at my place. His toothbrush. His stupid video game controller. A pair of sneakers I’d been “looking for” for months.

That’s when I found them.

I went home and started putting Scott’s things into boxes.

A stash of expensive products in my closet. Designer cologne in a sleek black bottle. High-end razors with gold handles. Luxury skincare kits. They were all still in their packaging.

Then I remembered. Scott was an influencer and product reviewer. Brands would send him free stuff in exchange for positive reviews and Instagram posts.

His career was taking off.

Then I remembered.

Twenty thousand followers.

Sponsorship contracts worth thousands of dollars.

He was always bragging about it. “Baby, I just got a contract with a cologne company. Five thousand dollars for one post,” he’d told me once. “I’m really making it, you know?”

And that’s when inspiration struck me.

Scott always used Instagram on his phone and on all shared devices, including mine.

He was always bragging about it.

I picked up my iPad and opened the app. I had never logged out.

I smiled.

First I posted a photo of the hotel bill. The $6,000.

The caption read: “Just finished the BEST week of my life at a 5-star hotel downtown! I used my girlfriend’s money to live like a king. I indulged in lobster, champagne, and couples massages (with my NEW girlfriend, not my old one, hehe). Cheers to being single and smart! Sometimes you have to use people to get what you want. 🤷🏻‍♂️😈💸💰 #NoRegrets #GetRidOfTheWeight #LivingMyBestLife #SorryNotSorry”

First I posted a photo of the hotel bill.

I clicked “Publish”.

Then I scrolled through their latest sponsored posts.

A high-end cologne brand. A luxury razor company.

An expensive skincare line. A fitness supplement.

A watch company.

I started writing reviews.

I clicked “Publish”.

For the colony:

“Honestly, it smelled like expired pickle juice mixed with regret and bad decisions. It gave me a headache for three days straight. My date literally walked away from me at dinner.”

I do NOT recommend it unless you’re trying to repel humans. 🤦🏻‍♂️😷

“Honestly, it smells like expired pickle juice.”

For the razor:

“This razor left me looking like I’d wrestled a lawnmower and LOST. Patchy, bloody, and embarrassing. I looked like a crime scene. My barber laughed at me. Zero stars. Negative stars if I could. 😤”

For the skin care line:

“This face cream made my skin break out worse than in a teen acne commercial. It looked like a pepperoni pizza had a baby with a strawberry. Save yourself the money and your face. 😱”

“Zero stars. Negative stars if I could. 😤”

For the fitness supplement:

“It tasted like chalk mixed with sadness. It gave me stomach cramps for two days. I spent more time in the bathroom than in the gym. Hard pass. 🤢🤮”

I posted them all, along with some extras, on his account.

Then I added one more post.

“Difficult to pass. 🤢🤮”

A selfie from her gallery with the caption:

“I found an AMAZING new girlfriend right after my breakup. Life moves so fast! I’ve already forgotten my last girlfriend’s name. 💞 #FullUpdate #NewBeginnings”

I sat down and watched. After a few minutes, the comments started coming in:

“Brother, what happened to you?”

“Why are you destroying brands that literally PAY you?”

“Congratulations! You’ve just ruined your career.”

“You seem unhinged, man.”

“I’m going to unfollow you. This is embarrassing.”

“Congratulations! You’ve just ruined your career.”

I smiled.

Then my phone rang. Scott.

I didn’t answer. He called again. And again. And again.

I put my phone on silent and poured myself a glass of wine.

I watched as it started losing followers. By the hundreds.

***

The next morning, someone was banging on my door. I looked through the peephole. Scott was standing there, his face red, holding his phone. I opened the door.

I watched as it started losing followers. By the hundreds.

“What did you do?”

“Good morning to you too.”

“I forgot I was still logged into Instagram on your iPad. You posted all that garbage pretending to be me, didn’t you?”

“Maybe next time you won’t be unfaithful and you’ll leave your passwords behind.”

“You ruined me! SEVEN brands abandoned me yesterday! TWO are threatening to sue me for breach of contract.”

I leaned against the doorframe. “That’s unfortunate.”

“Maybe next time you won’t be unfaithful and you’ll leave your passwords behind.”

“Lamentable? Amy, you ruined my career!”

“You destroyed my bank account. My confidence. My Valentine’s Day. And my dignity.”

“This is different! I had DEALS! I had PARTNERSHIPS.”

“And they charged $6,000 to my card while you were sleeping with someone else in a room I paid for.”

She stared at me, breathing heavily. “You have to take those posts down. Right now.”

“Or what?”

“Amy, you ruined my career!”

His phone rang. Scott looked at the screen and paled.

“I have to attend to this.”

He answered, putting it on speakerphone without a second thought.

“Hello? Yes, this is Scott. No, I…”

A man’s voice blasted through the loudspeaker.

“DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT YOU DID?!”

“Sir, I can explain…”

Scott looked at the screen and went pale.

“WE SENT YOU A $50,000 CAMPAIGN AND YOU POST THAT OUR PRODUCT SMELLS LIKE GARBAGE AND REGRET IT?!”

Scott’s hand was trembling. “I didn’t write that! I swear, someone hacked my account…”

“I don’t care who wrote it! It’s on your account with YOUR name! We will withdraw the contract, demand the return of our products, and take legal action for damages.”

The line was cut.

“Someone hacked my account…”.

Scott looked at me, his face contorted. “You destroyed me.”

“No! It was you! The moment you decided to use me, leave me, and celebrate with someone else using MY money.”

“I was going to give it back to you!”

“When? After you’ve collected another three thousand? After you’ve finished your little vacation?”

She opened her mouth. She closed it. Nothing came out.

“You destroyed me.”

I grabbed a box of her things and handed it to her. “Take your things and get out. And hey, next time change your Instagram password. Oh, and don’t forget to log out of all your devices.”

Her phone rang again.

Another angry voice. “Scott, what the hell is going on with your account? I’m seeing a post where you’re bragging about using your girlfriend’s money!”

“Oh, and don’t forget to log out of all devices.”

He grabbed the box and went down the hall, shouting into the phone.

“It wasn’t me! I swear. My ex hacked me…”

I closed the door.

That afternoon, I checked Instagram. Scott had deleted the posts. But it was too late. There were screenshots everywhere. People were sharing them, laughing, commenting, and publicly mocking him.

Scott had deleted the posts. But it was too late.

His number of followers had decreased by 5,000 people.

Their brand deals had vanished. Their reputation was in ruins.

And me? I was sitting on my sofa, eating ice cream, reviewing the chaos I had created.

Some heartbreaks end in tears.

Mine ended with brand cancellations, screaming customers, and a very satisfying “log out of all devices.”

Some heartbreaks end in tears.

If this happened to you, what would you do? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the Facebook comments.
