The house was so cheap I thought I’d won the lottery, but when I saw the basement, I understood everything

I was tired of paying rent my whole life and was ready to fulfill my dream of buying my own home. A dream house at an unbeatable price seemed like the ultimate victory… until I realized there were reasons for the low price hidden in the basement.

The first time I saw the house, I could hardly believe my luck.

It looked like something out of a postcard: a charming colonial house with white siding and green shutters, tucked away at the end of a quiet, tree-lined street.

The paint was a bit peeling and the roof needed some repairs, but it had character. A lived-in charm that felt… welcoming. Almost.

Susan, the real estate agent, waited by the door, with a smile as bright as the clipboard of documents she was waving in the air.

“A perfect day to finish your dream house, huh?” he said, in such a cheerful tone that it made me wonder if he was overdoing it.

I nodded, eager to see the inside. The house did not disappoint. Room by room, it seemed to reveal more reasons to fall in love.

The living room had a fireplace that practically begged for stockings at Christmas, and the wooden floors creaked just enough to remind you that they had a history.

Susan was behind me, her heels clicking against the floor as she narrated.

“You won’t find an opportunity like this anywhere else,” he said, tucking a lock of dark hair behind his ear.

“A house like this at this price? Practically unheard of.”

He was right, and I knew it. Even so, something didn’t quite add up, just a whisper of doubt in the back of my mind. It grew louder as we reached the basement door.

Unlike the others, this one had a lock. Not just a simple latch, but a solid, sturdy lock that seemed out of place in a cozy house like this.

“What’s down there?” I asked, pointing at the door.

Susan’s smile faltered, just for a second. She recovered quickly, but the hesitation had been enough.

“The basement,” he said, waving his hand as if to dismiss it. “It’s the usual storage space. I’ve lost the key. I’ll have it sent to me later.”

Her voice wavered, and the way she avoided my gaze made my stomach churn. But I told myself I was overthinking it.

After all, this was my dream house, wasn’t it? A place where I could start over.

I signed the papers and Susan hurried off, her heels clicking faster than before.

When I started unloading the boxes from the car, the sun was setting and casting long shadows across the street.

That’s when I noticed her: an older woman, standing on the porch of the house next door.

Her face was a map of deep wrinkles and her thin lips curled into a tense, disapproving line, as if she had just bitten into a lemon.

“Hello!” I called, trying to sound cheerful. “I’m your new neighbor.”

She didn’t answer. She just stared, her eyes squinting, before turning around and disappearing inside her house without a word.

The door slammed shut behind her.

I shrugged, telling myself she was probably just a bitter old woman. Even so, her silence was eating me up inside.

I spent the rest of the day unpacking, trying to ignore the feeling of unease that was creeping in.

When I collapsed on the sofa, exhaustion took over and I drifted into a restless sleep, with the house settling around me as if it were testing me, deciding whether I belonged there.

I woke up to a sound that pulled me from the depths of sleep, a sound I couldn’t place.

At first I thought it might have been the wind rattling the old windows, but then it came back, soft and eerie, like a child’s giggle.

My heart began to beat strongly and insistently, and I lay motionless for a moment, trying to hear more. Was I dreaming?

The giggle returned, this time clearer. Sharp, carefree, and completely out of place in the stillness of the night.

A lump formed in my throat and fear ran down my spine. I sat up and scanned the dimly lit room.

Shadows stretched across the walls, and the only sound was the ticking of the old clock above the fireplace. But the giggle was real. He knew it.

Swallowing my nerves, I grabbed the closest thing I could find: a mop leaning against a corner of the room.

My palms were already sweaty and the handle felt slippery when I gripped it tightly.

I crawled through the house, the wooden floor creaking beneath my feet. My breathing was shallow, and each step made my chest feel tighter.

The sound grew louder as I approached the basement door. The lock glowed dimly in the gloom. I stopped, staring at the door as if it might move on its own.

My stomach churned as I raised the mop, gripping it like a weapon. “Who’s there?” I shouted, my voice trembling.

Silence. For a moment I thought maybe the sound was in my head.

Then it happened again: a giggle, followed by a soft, whispering silence that gave me goosebumps.

I didn’t dare open the door. Instead, I stepped back, picked up the phone, and dialed 911 with trembling fingers.

The operator’s calm voice tried to reassure me, but all I could do was babble about the noises.

Twenty minutes felt like an eternity before the flashing red and blue lights finally appeared outside.

An officer came out, relaxed and unimpressed. “What’s going on here?” he asked, tilting his head toward me.

“There’s someone in the basement,” I said, trying to steady my voice. “I heard laughter.”

He raised an eyebrow. “Laughs, huh?” With a sigh, he grabbed a car lever and walked over to the door.

The sound of the lock turning echoed through the silent house. I held my breath as I disappeared down the stairs, my flashlight casting strange, flickering shadows.

Minutes later he reappeared, shaking his head.

“Just cobwebs and dust,” he said, his tone full of skepticism. “There’s nothing down there.”

“But I know what I heard!” I protested, with the heat rising to my face.

He smiled contentedly, shrugging his shoulders.

“It won’t be the first time. The last owners said the same thing. If you’re afraid, maybe this isn’t the house for you.”

I clenched my fists, frustration simmering. “I’m not going anywhere. This is my home.”

“Whatever you want, and good luck with the haunted house.” He left laughing, leaving me standing in the hallway, mop in hand, fuming as the sound of his car faded into the night.

The next morning, my phone buzzed on the counter, breaking the stillness of the house.

I picked it up and looked at the screen. A number I didn’t recognize. Hesitantly, I answered.

“Hello?”

“Hello, I’m Margaret,” said a thin, raspy voice on the other end.

“The previous owner. She just wanted to know how you were settling in.”

His voice immediately made me nervous, as if he already knew something I didn’t. I hesitated before answering.

“The house is beautiful,” I said cautiously. “But… something strange happened last night.”

There was a pause. I heard her breathing, soft and uneven. Then she sighed, with a long, heavy sound that made my stomach drop.

“You’re not the first, Clara,” he finally admitted.

“There’s… a story about that house. Some say it’s haunted. I’ve tried to fix it, but nothing works.”

“Nice?” The word hung in the air like a mist. My fingers tightened around the phone. “What kind of story?” I asked, my voice firmer than I felt.

She dodged the question.

“If you want to leave, I’m willing to buy the property back,” she said quickly, her tone almost desperate. “Not for the full price, but close enough.”

His offer was tempting. He wouldn’t have to put up with the creepy noises or the strange basement.

But the idea of resigning filled me with pride. I had worked so hard for this company. I wasn’t going to abandon it.

“No,” I said firmly. “I’ll sort it out.”

After hanging up, I grabbed a flashlight and headed down to the basement. The air was cool and damp, with a musty, moldy smell.

I scanned the basement with the beam of light. Dusty shelves, old pipes, and cobwebs filled my view.

Then I noticed something strange: marks on the floor, near the ventilation duct. Faint but deliberate, as if something had been moved. My pulse quickened. Something wasn’t right.

That night I lay in bed, the blankets pulled tight, every muscle tense. I stared at the ceiling, listening to the silence.

But it wasn’t quiet. It seemed as if the house was holding its breath, waiting for something to happen.

Then it came. The giggle. The same unsettling, childish sound that sent shivers down my spine.

I sat up, my heart pounding, but this time it wasn’t just a laugh. It was followed by a faint hiss, like air escaping from a tire.

My chest tightened as I slid out of bed and down the stairs on tiptoe, each step creaking more than I would have liked.

When I reached the basement door, I froze. A pale mist was creeping out from underneath, coiling like ghostly fingers in the hallway.

My breath caught in my throat and I fumbled for the phone, quickly dialing 911.

The now familiar police patrol car soon arrived. The same officer got out, with an expression that combined anger and disbelief.

“Again?” he said, shaking his head as he approached.

Before she could answer, another car pulled up in the driveway. Margaret got out, her face pale and haggard, her movements nervous.

“I’ve heard what’s going on,” he said, avoiding my gaze.

“Let’s all go down together,” I suggested, trying to keep my voice steady. The officer sighed, but nodded, already holding the flashlight.

Margaret hesitated, but, looking at me, she reluctantly agreed.

The basement was as empty as before: dusty shelves, cobwebs, and shadows.

“See? Nothing,” the officer said, clearly frustrated. “Are you sure you’re not imagining things?”

I wasn’t going to back down. “I’ve got a camera ready,” I said, pulling out my phone. “Let’s check the recording.”

I pressed play. The video showed Margaret sneaking into the basement.

He unlocked the door, placed a small speaker near the ventilation grille, and started a smoke machine before quickly leaving.

The agent’s jaw tightened. “Well, well,” he murmured. “Looks like we have a case.”

Margaret’s face turned red. “I… I was just trying to get the house back!” she stammered. “I didn’t mean to hurt anyone!”

The officer put the handcuffs on his wrists. “You can explain that to the judge.”

As they took her away, I stood in my doorway, taking deep breaths. For the first time, I felt she was truly mine. I had fought for her and I had won.
