Ithought my mother-in-law had finally accepted me. She threw a party to celebrate my pregnancy with balloons, gifts, and even a cake. For a moment, I believed everything had changed, until she pinned a ribbon around my chest with two words that made my heart stop: “Surrogate Mother.”
Eric and I had the kind of marriage people envied. He made me laugh, listened when I needed to vent, and took me by the hand to all my doctor’s appointments. We were finally expecting our first baby after years of dreaming about it.

The baby’s room was half-painted, the crib was already assembled, and Eric still kissed my belly every morning before work as if it were a sacred ritual. I had never felt more loved or safer in my life.
There was nothing wrong with me, except for one thing: his family. His mother, Patricia, never liked me.
She made it clear the first time we met, asking me if I “planned to work forever” and telling Eric in front of me that I didn’t seem like someone who could support a household.

I laughed, but things only got worse. Once she tried to introduce Eric to another woman, right in front of me, and acted surprised when I didn’t think it was nice.
And his sister Heather? Just as bad. They both acted as if I had stolen him from some perfect imaginary woman they had already chosen.
Patricia even tried to ruin our wedding. Right when I was behind the church doors, holding my bouquet and waiting for the music to start.

Patricia rushed down the aisle with Heather and her fiancé in tow, shouting that there had been a mix-up and that it was supposed to be her wedding.
It all ended in shouting, tears, and me threatening to leave barefoot if Eric didn’t show up in five minutes. And he did. He told his mother to leave, and we left the next morning without saying goodbye.
We hadn’t seen them again.

But one afternoon, Eric came into the room with a strange look on his face. I was folding little onesies and trying to decide if we really needed three different sizes of diapers already.
“My mother called,” he said, as if the words weighed heavily on him.
I froze mid-fold. “Okay… so?”

“She wants us to visit her. She said she wanted to congratulate us properly.”
I stared at him. “Congratulate us?”
She nodded. “Yes. She said she wanted to leave everything behind and celebrate the baby. Like a new beginning.”
I laughed. In fact, I laughed out loud. “Can you believe it?”

“It sounded different,” she said softly. “Like… warm.”
“Not a single day of her life has been warm.”
“I know, but I want to give him a chance to try.”
I looked at the bodysuit I was holding. A new beginning. I didn’t believe it, not for a second.

But I saw the hope in her eyes and I didn’t have the courage to take it away, so I nodded.
“Okay. A visit.”
We entered Patricia’s house on a sunny Saturday afternoon. The house looked the same, meticulous, rigid, and painfully symmetrical, as if it had been taken directly from a magazine a decade earlier.

I looked at Eric, who squeezed my hand and whispered, “Let’s see how it goes.”
As soon as the door opened, I froze. The entire room was decorated with pastel-colored balloons, diaper-shaped cakes, and a huge banner that read “Welcome, baby!”
There were cupcakes with tiny onesies on top, a table covered in gifts, and music playing softly in the background.

Heather appeared out of nowhere and hugged me. “You look radiant,” she said, smiling as if we were lifelong friends. “Pregnancy suits you!”
She was too stunned to answer. Eric’s mother was next, arms outstretched. “Julia,” she said gently, “we’re so happy for you.”
I blinked. Patricia? Happy for me?

Eric smiled at me as if he were witnessing a miracle. “I told you so,” he whispered.
Everyone seemed to be in a great mood. They touched my belly, gave me unsolicited advice, and told me how strong I looked.
For a moment, a dangerous and foolish moment, I allowed myself to believe that perhaps things had really changed. Perhaps the baby had softened them. Perhaps they finally saw me as part of the family.

Then Patricia raised her glass. “Before we cut the cake, we have something special for you, Julia,” she said.
She approached with a ribbon in her hands, pink and sparkly, clearly custom-made. She smiled as she placed it across my chest. It read, “Surrogate Mother.”
I stared at the letters. My hands went cold. “What… what is this?” I asked quietly.

Heather giggled. “You didn’t think we’d forgotten, did you? This is all for you. We’re so grateful.”
I took a step back. “Grateful… for what?”
Patricia seemed confused by my reaction. “Julia, since you made such a beautiful sacrifice for our family, we wanted to honor it.”

Eric approached me, frowning. “What are you talking about?”
Patricia turned to him. “Don’t pretend you didn’t know, Heather told me everything. The baby is for them. You both agree.”
Heather proudly held up her own ribbon, white with gold lettering that read, “Mom”.
I couldn’t speak. I felt dizzy, as if the ground was tilting beneath my feet.

“What the hell are you saying?” Eric finally blurted out. “We never agreed to anything. He’s our son.”
Patricia waved her hand. “Don’t lie, Eric. Julia told Heather, and I quote, ‘If I could give you a baby, I would.’ She’s her surrogate. That’s why she’s here.”
“I said that a year ago! In the middle of a conversation about how awful it must be not to be able to conceive! That was sympathy, not a legal contract,” I shouted.

Heather crossed her arms. “You meant it. I believed you. We believed you.”
Patricia raised her voice. “Well, you can’t change her mind now, not after everything we’ve done. Heather and Mark prepared the nursery, they told everyone. They already planned their leave, they even chose a name!”
My voice broke. “That’s not my fault! Everyone clung to something that was never real!”

Eric grabbed my arm. “Let’s go.”
Patricia shouted after us: “You’re being selfish, Julia! You owe it to the family.”
I turned around one last time. “I don’t owe them anything.”
We left everything behind—the balloons, the cake, the astonished faces—and drove straight to a hotel. Neither of us said a word the entire way.

At the hotel, I sat on the edge of the bed, still trembling. My hands were clenched so tightly I felt my nails cutting into my palms. Eric paced like a man trying to escape his own thoughts.
Then he stopped and looked at me. “Julia… there’s something I have to tell you.”
I didn’t move. “Now what?”

She sat down across from me, her voice low. “I didn’t know my mother would do that, I swear I didn’t. But… Mark just called me.”
I slowly looked up.
Eric cleared his throat. “He said he knew Heather had told Mom about their conversation. He said they really want a baby and… that he’s willing to make it worthwhile.”

I blinked. “What does that mean?”
Eric hesitated. “He offered us money. Five hundred thousand dollars.”
My chest tightened. “He’s joking.”
“He said it would help us. We could pay off the mortgage, start a real future. We could have more children later and not worry about anything.”

“Did you talk about this? Without me?” I asked, my voice dangerously low.
“I only listened,” he said quickly. “I didn’t accept anything. But Julia… think about it. Half a million dollars.”
I stared at him for a long time, and something inside me broke, but I didn’t show it. I didn’t scream. I didn’t cry. I smiled. A slow, fake smile that made his shoulders relax just a little.

“Good,” I said.
He blinked. “Do you agree?”
“I mean… maybe it makes sense. We help them and build a better life for ourselves. If that makes everyone happy…”
Eric leaned forward, his voice filled with relief. “Would you really consider it?”

I nodded. “If we do it on our terms.”
He took my hands. “Thank you. This is… the right thing to do.”
He had no idea.
From that day on, I played along. Everyone was delighted. Heather called me every couple of days to “check on the baby,” and Patricia even sent me flowers.

Eric kept going on about what we would do with the money. I kept smiling, kept nodding, keeping my anger well hidden behind my teeth.
Three months later, I gave birth to a beautiful, perfect baby girl. At the hospital, Heather and Patricia were waiting outside the room, practically bouncing around.
I told the nurse to give us a few hours alone before letting anyone in. Eric said that was fair.

“Mark already transferred the money to our account. We’ll give it to her tonight,” she whispered, taking my hand.
I smiled and kissed her cheek. “Good.”
He seemed relieved. I saw his shoulders slump, as if the weight of it all had finally disappeared.
He pulled me into a hug and whispered, “You’re doing something amazing.” I nodded, pressing my face against his chest. I didn’t say anything. I didn’t need to.

That night I told her I wanted to go buy a gift. Just something small. Something sweet.
Something to say goodbye. I told her I needed a moment alone. She smiled and told me to take my time. She said she was going to stay and rest.
He kissed me on the forehead before leaving. “You’re amazing, Julia.”
I walked out the door with the baby in my arms. My heart was steady. I knew what I was doing.

In the elevator, I opened the banking app on my phone. I moved every dollar from our joint account.
Mark’s 500,000, plus the rest. I sent it all to a private account. I opened it months ago. He never knew it existed.
We got into the car. I looked at my daughter and smiled. She blinked as if she knew. The birth certificate? My name. Only mine.

She had the divorce papers ready and waiting for Eric at home, already signed and dated. She had left them on the kitchen counter, next to her favorite mug.
That night, my phone wouldn’t stop buzzing. Call after call. Dozens of messages. Eric. Patricia. Heather. All capital letters. All rage.
WHERE ARE YOU? HOW CAN YOU DO THIS? THEY PROMISED.

I didn’t answer. I didn’t even open them. I knew what I’d done. And I’d do it again.
Never, for any amount of money, would I let her be raised by people who thought of her as a transaction. Because that little girl in my arms was mine. Entirely mine.
