Madison and Jessica turned to stealing after escaping their abusive stepfather. A fateful robbery at the mansion of an unknown elderly woman leads them down an unexpected path when they stumble upon a photograph linked to their past.
“One last signature there,” the lawyer said, smiling as the 25-year-old twins, Madison and Jessica, followed him. “That’s it! It’s all yours!”
Once the lawyer left, Jessica’s gaze lingered on the soaring ceilings and ornate decor of the Victorian-style mansion nestled on the outskirts of the quiet town.

“Can you believe it, Maddy?” she exclaimed, feeling the excitement coursing through her veins. “Now she’s ours! She’s OURS!” Jessica rejoiced, unaware that her sister hadn’t said a word and was instead weeping silently.
“Maddy, what’s wrong?” Jessica asked, confused.
“Jess, this mansion, the way we got it… It still feels like a dream,” Madison said, breathless and incredulous. She closed her eyes and thought about the lowest point in her life, sixteen years ago. They were nine years old and had only $3 in their pockets after running away from their stepfather.
In the fall of 2002, the twins were living with their stepfather, Martin, after their mother died in a car accident in 1999. Although he had always struggled with alcohol, his wife’s death made things worse. He took out his frustrations on them and was unable to hold down a job.
Madison and Jessica tried to behave, despite how often he reminded them that they were a burden. But after years of this mistreatment, one night Martin came home drunk, expecting food on the table.
“We’re so sorry, sir,” Madison said softly, lowering her head in fear. “We had a lot of homework to do today. Dinner will be ready in 20 minutes. Please forgive us for being late.”
“She’s telling the truth,” Jessica agreed.

Even so, Martin didn’t like her answer. He grabbed his notebooks and bags and carelessly threw them around the living room.
“I don’t care about your school. Do you understand that, you lazy rats?” Martin shouted, terrifying them. “If I have to raise you, you’ll have to work here! If this happens again, you’ll be out on the street!”
The girls looked at each other, and although it wasn’t the first time he had threatened to kick them out, his words still caused intense terror.
Madison began to cry as Jessica tried to stop the tears, saying, “Yes, sir.”
Martin smiled, his anger dissipating now that he knew they were afraid. He grabbed a beer from the fridge and sat down in front of the TV while he dialed for pizza. Of course, he wouldn’t share it with them.
Madison ran to her room, and Jessica followed closely behind. “What are we going to do?” she asked her sister, crying. “We can’t live with that ogre anymore.”
Her twin sister wiped away her tears. “Where would we go?”
“I don’t know, but he doesn’t even feed us. He hates us,” Jessica continued. “Wouldn’t it be better to leave? To run away?”
“Run away to where?” Madison asked, looking around.
“Anywhere. Somewhere better than this,” added her sister, shrugging.

“Okay,” Madison said, nodding. They fell silent and looked into each other’s eyes for a long time. Then they hugged tightly and began packing. They checked the few pennies and dimes they had managed to steal here and there, but it only amounted to three dollars between the two of them.
When they were ready, they quietly left the room, checking that Martin was fast asleep. His pizza box was only half empty, and he still had the can of beer in his hand.
Jessica stopped Madison for a second. “Wait, I can’t leave until I do something,” Jessica said, dropping her things on the floor and running toward her stepfather’s room.
“What are you doing?” Madison whispered, panicking. But Jessica quickly returned with a bottle. She tiptoed over to Martin and sprinkled a powder into his open beer can. Luckily, he was snoring loudly.
Jessica threw the bottle on the floor, grabbed her things, and made Madison leave.
“What was that?” her sister asked.
“Laxative,” she replied, smiling slightly.
Madison was about to burst out laughing, but she covered her mouth and they left, never to see her horrible stepfather again.

For the next fifteen years, the girls traveled across the country, surviving by stealing and begging wherever they could. Eventually, they saved enough money to buy a cheap minivan.
They had to leave the cities quickly and change their appearance after stealing. It was a complicated life, but it worked for them. Jessica was the most daring, while Madison tended to be more reserved and timid when she was stealing.
While traveling through Boston, they suddenly came across a neighbor who owned a large and beautiful mansion.
“Look at that house, Maddy. I bet we could just get one jewelry box and be set for the rest of the year,” Jessica remarked, stopping the car a few steps away.
“I don’t know, Jess. Those wrought iron fences are really strong. They’ll be hard to climb. Besides, I’m sure those places have alarm systems and stuff, right?” Madison shook her head, but stared at the place in amazement.
“Fine, I’m going,” Jessica insisted, unbuckling her seatbelt and getting out of the driver’s seat. Madison followed her, trying to dissuade her.
As she’d anticipated, the fence was difficult to climb, but at least there was no alarm. Jessica was an expert at picking locks, but she knew that the wealthy always left their gates unlocked. “Bingo,” she whispered, opening a side door.

The twins entered a dressing room and searched as quickly as possible, finding jewelry and designer handbags in abundance.
When they were ready to leave, Madison lifted her heavy bag and accidentally bumped into a vase.
“Oh!” she whispered, looking at her sister with panicked eyes.
“We have to go,” Jessica said calmly. “Let’s pray he hasn’t found out.”
“Who’s there?” they suddenly heard as the lights came on. An old woman in a nightgown stood in the doorway. “Who are you?”
The twins stared at each other, wondering what to do next.
“Oh, no. Please don’t take that,” the woman continued, her eyes fixed on the box Jessica was holding because it wouldn’t fit in her purse. Her eyes quickly welled up with tears. “Take anything else but that, and I won’t call the police.”
The twins grew nervous, but Jessica wasn’t about to let go of that box now that the old woman had basically confirmed it was valuable. “MADDY, RUN!” she yelled, running toward the old woman in the doorway and pushing her aside.

“Please, those jewels are worth more than money!” the old woman lamented after recovering from the fall.
Madison hesitated for only a second before following her sister. They hurried out the door and didn’t look back until they were safely inside their van. Madison glanced up at the mansion and saw the old woman looking out the window.
“We’ve done something terrible, Jess,” Madison lamented. “She said they’re worth more than money.”
“Yes, that means what’s in this box is more valuable than everything else. That’s how we survived,” Jessica blurted out, and continued driving.
They were too tired to leave Boston that night, so they stopped at an empty rest area, and Jessica quickly fell asleep. Madison couldn’t stay still, so she picked up the box and went back to the old woman’s house.
Instead of going back inside, Madison rang the doorbell. The old woman’s eyes widened when she saw her without her mask and holding the jewelry box.
“I’m sorry for what we did earlier,” Madison said softly, her voice filled with guilt and compassion. “My sister and I were in a difficult situation. Please forgive us. Don’t call the police.”
The old woman looked at her gently, holding back tears, and asked Madison to come in. She asked the girl to call her Mrs. George, and they began to talk. After a while, Madison looked at the pictures on the mantelpiece and noticed many people.

But one painting caught his attention.
“Who is it?” Madison stammered, her eyes filling with tears. The old woman’s eyes followed Madison’s gaze to the photo, and she was puzzled as to what had suddenly made the young woman cry.
“Well, that… that’s my late daughter, Amber,” Mrs. George replied gently, her glasses fogged with warm tears. “She was a beauty, wasn’t she? But why are you crying?”
Madison’s heart skipped a beat as she stared at the photo and then back at Mrs. George.
“What? Your daughter? No way… That’s my MOM!”
The room fell silent as the two women exchanged a puzzled glance, their eyes filled with emotion. “Your mother?” the grandmother whispered, her face frozen.
“Oh my God! This is incredible! Honey, I’m your grandmother!” Mrs. George gasped as she squeezed Madison into a tight hug, realizing that they were connected in ways they never could have imagined.
“How can this be? I never knew we had a grandmother!” Madison exclaimed, shocked. “I’ll go get my sister. She needs to know too.”

Madison ran to the minivan and told Jessica everything.
“What! And she’s our grandmother? God… How is that possible? How come we didn’t know about her all these years?” Jessica was stunned when her sister revealed the encounter at their grandmother’s mansion.
“Yes, Jess! It’s incredible. The woman we just robbed is our GRANDMA! We’re going to find out more.”
They spoke with the elderly woman, apologizing for having stolen from her. Mrs. George also apologized, as she had never known of their existence.
“My daughter and I had several problems. She was crazy about boys and didn’t choose the right men. In the end, she broke up with me, and I didn’t even know where she had gone to live. I thought it best to let her come and see me later,” her grandmother explained.
They talked some more, and the old woman told them to stay at her house. A few days later, they took a DNA test to confirm it, and Mrs. George promised them they would never have to steal again.
Nine months later, Mrs. George passed away, and Madison and Jessica inherited her house and all her properties, although it took them a few months to finalize everything.

“If we had met her sooner, we could have lived this life all this time,” Madison cried, and Jessica ran into her arms.
“Instead, we broke into our grandmother’s house,” Jessica shouted and laughed, tightening her hug.
“Breaking into this house was the best thing we ever did,” Madison said. “So, thank you. For being our brave, stupid Robin Hood.”
