“Daniel, it’s okay. Let us come.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Every time someone tells me what they’ve done with their baby, I hear it as criticism. Every time someone wants to hold Sophie, a part of me wants to take her away.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“That sounds exhausting.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It is”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her cheek dried.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“My mother feels at ease because I can tell her to leave me alone. I’m not worried that she’s going to hate me.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Well, that’s true”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

“But I had already decided what kind of mother-in-law you were going to be before you even became that person.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That was the apology I needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Thank you for telling me that.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He looked at me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I still need boundaries.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I would never transfer them”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

I smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Just because I’m excited about Sophie doesn’t give me permission to ignore what you need. But being her grandmother also doesn’t mean you should treat me like I’m about to commit a crime.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lauren laughed through her tears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You’re right”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s not like we suddenly became very close after that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
