Then I found an envelope with my name written on it… and discovered exactly who had been watching me.

The cafeteria smelled of burnt espresso and lemon cleaner. My back ached from working a double shift, and my apron pocket was bursting with quarters.

At twenty-three, I was working in a coffee shop and saving every penny I could. Someday, I wanted to own my own place. Mom always said that the little brown mole above my left eyebrow meant I had a head for business, and that one day I’d make the most of it.

The truth is, I never believed those things. But I liked believing him.

I realized he was looking at me.

“Go,” I told Sara when she offered to stay. “Your son has a science fair.”

He waved goodbye and scurried away.

I put up the “CLOSED ” sign and started cleaning the tables.

The last customer had been the same quiet man who’d been coming in these past few months. Gray hair at his temples, a small black coffee, a cash tip. He never said much, but sometimes I caught him looking at me.

He blamed her for how little she knew about him.

My mother, Linda, sent me a message while I was cleaning the espresso machine.

Drive carefully. I made you lasagna 😉

I smiled and replied, “I love you ❤️ I’m almost done.”

Linda had raised me alone. My father, Daniel, died when I was five. A car accident. That was pretty much all she’d ever told me. She’d never even shown me a picture of him.

A small white envelope.

As a child, I blamed her for how little she knew about him. Every time I asked her about Daniel, Linda would change the subject until she stopped asking altogether. I loved her, but a part of me never forgave her for that silence.

The only relative on my father’s side I really knew was my grandfather, Arthur. We weren’t particularly close, but every birthday he would mail me a card with twenty dollars inside and the same phrase written at the end: “Build yourself a life that’s your own.”

The cards had stopped arriving months ago. I assumed she had died. Linda had never said otherwise.

I pushed that thought out of my mind and picked up the tip jar. That’s when I saw him.

Three photos fell out.

A small white envelope, folded once, was tucked between the crumpled one- and five-cent notes. My name was written on the front in clear handwriting.

“Julie”.

I turned it over. It didn’t say who sent it. Just my name.

“How cute,” I murmured, thinking that Sara had left me a note.

I slid a finger under the flap. Three photos fell onto the counter, along with a folded sheet of paper.

I unfolded the letter.

The first photo showed a young boy holding a little girl who couldn’t have been more than a year old.

The second photo showed the same man a few years later, standing next to a little girl in a pink jacket near a swing set in the back garden. The little girl was me . I recognized the jacket, the garden, and even the crooked wooden fence of the house where we had lived until I was five.

The third photo left me speechless.

The man was older now, with gray hair at his temples, standing alone on a sidewalk. She knew that face. She’d been serving him black coffee for a few months.

My father, who was dead, was alive.

My hands got cold. I had one just like it. I’d been seeing him at the cafe for months, but for some reason, I’d never noticed his.

I didn’t remember parking.

My father, who was dead , was alive, and had just served him a coffee.

I dropped the rag, picked up my bag, and ran out the door without locking it.

I didn’t ignore her warning not to tell Mom and went straight to her house.

****

My hands were shaking so much on the wheel that I almost ran a red light. My voice came out higher than I meant to. “Mom, tell me who this is.”

She didn’t respond.
