Mom nodded. “Yes.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“And neither of them can decide how long it takes me to forgive them.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“No,” Mom said. “We can’t.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Macy opened her purse and took out an old folded note.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hanna looked from one to the other.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

“I’ve kept this since the night Evangeline left Leonard.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She gave it to Hanna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the paper there was a single line written in Mom’s handwriting from when she was young.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Macy spoke gently. “He meant it. Fear changed what he did, but he never stopped loving you.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
