“And that’s why you took her out of my life?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Robert lowered his shoulders.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

“The doctors couldn’t explain what was happening. She had run away from home twice before anyone realized she was sick. She would forget appointments, leave the stove on, sometimes forget you at school. I was scared,” Robert admitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I thought that if you watched her slowly disappear, it would destroy you.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“So you told me that he had abandoned me?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I thought that way it would hurt you less. Then the years went by. And every year it became harder to admit what I had done.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kyle’s voice hardened.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

“You let me hate her for 30 years.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Robert started to cry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I never imagined I would live this long.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kyle looked towards the car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gladys smiled at Mia through the window, completely unaware of the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, Robert whispered, “I’m sorry.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kyle pressed the cards to his chest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I believe you mean it.” He looked directly at his father. “But I’m fed up with you deciding what I can endure.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We left without saying anything else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gladys had good days and difficult days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some mornings she remembered Kyle’s name; other mornings, she wondered where her little boy had gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From time to time he would still go into Mia’s room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One morning, Gladys stopped at the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He smiled at Mia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“And now?”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She smiled through her tears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Now I know he spent thirty years trying to find his way back.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From then on, every night, before Mia went up to her room, she would stand in front of Gladys’s bedroom door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I always asked him the same question.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

“Do you need anything, grandma?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most nights, Gladys just smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes she would ask for a glass of water, other times she would ask where Kyle was, and other times she would completely forget who Mia was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But every single night, Mia would give him a kiss on the forehead before turning off the light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every time I passed by that kitchen, I remembered the pillow, the blanket, and the glass of water that was next to my daughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
